RE: BUSH'S IRAQ WAR JUSTIFICATION BUILT ON LIES
The League of the South, the premier Southern nationalist organization,
questions the motivations of the Bush administration for risking American lives
in the recent invasion of Iraq.
Randolph Bourne once remarked that "war is the health of the state."
Recent revelations appear to indicate that the Bush administration and its allies
have sought the health of the state (and its well-heeled and influential
friends in the international business community) at the expense of ordinary
Americans who risked life and limb in Iraq.
The Bush administration gave three reasons to justify war with Iraq: 1)
that Saddam Hussein had "weapons of mass destruction" (WMDs) and planned to use
them against the U.S.; 2) that Iraq was directly linked to the al Qaida
terrorist network; and 3) that Saddam Hussein must be toppled in order to
"liberate" the Iraqi people.
To date there have been no WMDs found in Iraq. No provable links between
Saddam and al Qaida have been established. That leaves only reason number
three. But if this is Bush's fallback position, then he is indeed going to be a
busy man as he "liberates" one persecuted people after another from tyrannical
regimes worldwide. Perhaps he will move against China next.
"On behalf of the Southern people," said League President Michael Hill,
"we demand that the Bush regime come clean about the reasons for war with Iraq.
Southerners bled and died more than any other Americans in this conflict, and
we believe Bush and his insiders at the State Department and Pentagon owe an
explanation to the kinfolks of those who died in this questionable war." Hill
continued: "We also believe that our folks down here are tired of the Bush
regime's old bromides about fighting these sorts of wars to 'preserve our
freedoms.' If America's recent wars were about preserving freedom, and not about
advancing the interests of the elites, then we ought to enjoy more freedom now
than at any other time in our history. That is not the case, however. The more
wars we fight, the less free we become. I think that is what Mr. Bourne meant
when he said that 'war is the health of the state.'"
